News Reader FLUD Raises $1 Million From Cavs Owner, Others

FLUD, a news reader app for the iPad and iPhone, announced today that it has raised $1 million in seed funding from a flock of notable angel investors. The round was led by Quicken Founder and Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert and ePrize Founder Josh Linkner, through their new venture fund Detroit Venture Partners. Other investors included Ludlow Ventures and Behance Founder Scott Belsky. Since launching in August 2010, the FLUD team has been working part-time on its news reader app, so Founder Bobby Ghoshal said that the startup will use its new funding to go after top engineering talent -- and begin working on the project full time. At present, FLUD is only available on the iPhone and iPad, so the team will push towards becoming device and platform agnostic. With the new funding in tow, Ghoshal said that he expects FLUD for Android to launch within the next few weeks.

Today in Pretty Space Pics: Stellar Birth and Death Captured in the Same Image

NGC 3582 ESO

The cosmic fireworks above capture both stellar birth and stellar death in one sweeping view. With eyes pointed at nebula NGC 3582, part of a larger star factory here in the Milky Way, the Wide Field Imager at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile managed to capture a nebula shaped by supernova glowing with the intense light of baby stars.

Some of the stars that form in the region are huge, far more massive than the one anchoring our solar system. These stars have shorter lifespans during which they dump huge amounts of energy into their surroundings. Then, like any good massive star, they collapse in on themselves in explosive supernovae.

Those supernovae create the corona effect you see above in the wispy loops of gas. At least, that's what astronomers think causes the bubble-like features around the fringes. The hot spots are definitely lit by stars fresh out of the nursery, but the important thing to know about this image is that you can get a wallpaper-res version here.

Color Updates Its iPhone App With More Intelligible Icons, Navigation And Faster Speed

Bye bye 69 symbol! Valley media darling/scapegoat Color has updated its iPhone App to 1.0.2 to address certain um, user interface issues. Color's launch caused a big splash in the Valley a couple weeks ago, due to what some people viewed as an unfairly allotted $41 million in funding as well as problems with the usability of the actual app -- Namely that it didn't work if other people weren't nearby. Color co-founder Peter Pham tells me the latest update was "crowd-sourced" as in Color listened to user feedback. Already it looks like the largest user complaints have been addressed, at least cursorily.
