Influence, Cash, or Hobby: Which Blogging Choice Is Right for You?

This guest post is by Brandon Connell of brandonconnell.com When I first started a blog that I took seriously, it was to promote an ebook that I had published on Amazon’s Digital Text platform. Initially, I wanted the blog to be my “author’s headquarters,” but soon after, I realized what I really wanted to do [...]

Brazil's Largest Newspaper Sues Parody Blog For Making Fun Of It

Marcos alerts us to a story coming out of Brazil, where the country's largest newspaper publisher, Folha de S. Paulo is apparently suing a parody blog that was set up to mock the publisher. The parody blog is called Falha de S. Paulo. Obviously, the names are similar, but it's a parody and it's apparently somewhat clever in Portuguese. "Folha" is apparently somewhat akin to "Journal" in English, while "Falha" means "failure." See? Clever. Apparently the Folha folks didn't think so. They got a court order demanding the site be shut down and then filed suit, demanding monetary damages. The claim, of course, is trademark infringement. Not being too familiar with Brazilian law, I don't know if there are parody exceptions, though obviously I think there should be. However, the claim is that it probably doesn't much matter either way, as many expect Folha to win simply due to its political clout. That would be unfortunate if true. Either way, it's a pretty sad statement when the largest newspaper in a country can't handle a little parody.

My Week With The iPod Nano Watch

When the first iPod Nano watch straps appeared on the scene in September, I was non-plussed. I've seen plenty of wrist-mounted MP3 players, phones, and other junk to understand that anything you wear on your wrist and still have to connect a pair of headphones to is bad news. In general, you look goofy and feel goofier. But there was something about the Nano watch. Maybe it was because Apple made it abundantly clear that this wasn't a watch. They made it hard to read the time - you have to press a button every time you want to see the clock - and they added a clip to suggest you should strap this to your jacket and not your wrist. But by gum I wanted to try the Nano watch.

World Wildlife Federation Creates Unprintable .WWF File Format to Save Trees

Save As .WWF

The World Wildlife Federation announced the creation of its first file format, WWF, designed as a replacement for PDF. It's essentially identical to PDF, except for one key difference: It can't be printed. The WWF hopes this will reduce unnecessary paper use, or at least bring some attention to the fact that lots of paper use is unnecessary.

Though PDFs are impressively flexible and useful paper-replacement files, many people and businesses are simply more comfortable printing physical copies. In some cases, with larger businesses, universities, and other organizations, that can mean ridiculous amounts of paper used and discarded for little reason. The environmental impact of paper is a contentious topic, one I'm sure will be discussed passionately in the comments (i.e. theoretical sustainability vs. illegal logging and optional governmental "guidelines"), but anyone that's worked in an office knows how much unnecessary printing happens on a regular basis.

The WWF format is essentially a plugin (Mac-only for now, but coming to Windows soon) that allows the user to save any document as a WWF. Those files can be opened and viewed in most programs used to open PDFs, except they can't be printed (and they add a little note about saving paper to the bottom of documents).

Will the WWF format actually do any good, besides increasing awareness? It can't stop a document from being printed, of course--users can always print screenshots. But in certain settings, especially business or educational, it might make sense to make it at least irritating to print some documents. A professor could forbid students from printing a hundred-page coursepack, for example. That's all assuming anybody actually embraces the format, which is doubtful, but it's not necessarily the worst idea ever.

One Way To Deal With Child Bullying: Have The Whole Internet Stand Up For You

We were just talking about the issue of bullying in schools, and the fact that many want to paint the internet as part of the "problem." However, in some cases it can be the solution as well. A few folks pointed us to the story of the first grade girl who was getting peer pressured by other students because she was a Star Wars fan, and "Star Wars is for boys." Her mother wrote about this on her blog, and one thing led to another, and a whole bunch of folks on the internet popped up to support the girl, Katie, including some actresses from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, who stepped up in support as well. Other kids spoke up, and other schools sent support. Apparently, the message has been received loud and clear at Katie's own school, where they're hosting a "Proud to be Me Day." I'm not sure there's really a lesson for bullying here, but I guess it means you shouldn't mess with Star Wars fans.
